The author is JOHNNY BLACK, noted for books on JIMI HENDRIX and R.E.M. and contributor for over twenty years to Mojo, Music Week and Q. |

MUNGO JERRY * BOILER ROOMS GUILDFORD 25/3/09 A repeat of the successful Mr Kyps & French shows of the 'Naked' line-up took place in the Boiler Rooms, Guildford, Surrey. A MUNGO JERRY trio gig with no set lists, no rehearsals and no bullshit.
Material ranged from 'BABY LET'S PLAY HOUSE', from the 1st MUNGO JERRY album that Mr.Bassman MIKE COLE played on to 'TAKE ME BACK', from the 'ARMY' LP that Mike didn’t but should of. Ray threw in for good measure the hits plus plenty of songs from the excellent new creation that is 'Naked'. A relatively young looking crowd (well young enough to be the sons & daughters of the MUNGO crew assembled) witnessed, enjoyed and boogied all the way home to the crowd pleaser and stage master that the showman RAY DORSET is.
Behind Ray on the drum stool and playing assorted percussion was BRUCE'BASH'BRAND, a fan and now an official band member who sure does blow a good jug. The gig was promoted by Ray’s son James, who did what most organisers have over the years failed to do and get the beat master off stage before the dawn breaks. It was also nice to meet up with some old and new friends alike and share some stories and jokes with ROLAND DUNNE, BARRY UPTON, GERRY HELDERS and Co. It was a shame that PAUL KING could not make it, but it seems we are getting nearer to the gig of all gigs when at least three of the original MUNGO’s take to the stage and belt out those old favourites. Add Mr.'Bash' Brand to the mix and it could be one hell of a treat, see you there. DEREK WADESON.

MUNGO JERRY MEETS LONNIE DONEGAN
RAY DORSET's gig at MIKE COLE's GOOGLIES JAZZ CLUB on the 21st of August was, not surprisingly a great success with special guest, LONNIE DONEGAN JR joining Ray, and MIKE COLE's band, on stage for the first time. LONNIE JR's manager, ROLAND DUNNE told us, "Ray and Lonnie had a great gig last night (friday 21/8/09). Ray was inspired and Lonnie was on form. And that was after barely a few practice songs! "We discussed various ways of future collaboration. Main thing is they loved playing together and Mike's band were a great support. Audience were up on their feet; unheard of in a jazz club"! LONNIE JR has accepted an invite to appear at the Faversham Kent Hop Festival on Sunday 6th September following on from his guest appearance with Ray last week which was very well received and has led to an upsurge of interest in live appearances. He is also booked to appear on Saturday 5th September at the Weyfest in Farnham, Surrey alongside JETHRO TULL and MUNGO JERRY. A leading rock magazine is preparing a feature on LONNIE JR, focusing on the Heritage aspect of both his Dad's music and how LONNIE JR is now carrying on and developing a band in the spirit of LONNIE SR, rather than being just a tribute band. Ray has been on radio on the DAVE CASH show talking, amongst other things, about the get-together with LONNIE JR. Roland added,"LONNIE DONEGAN laid the ground out for the ROLLING STONES, BEATLES and pretty much all of British Rock and Blues. Of course the skiffle sound was single handedly revived by MUNGO JERRY in the 1970's so there are huge affinities for both fans & band members of MUNGO JERRY with LONNIE DONEGAN.
