| SINGLE OF THE WEEK - Destined to be one of the biggest for summer'70, the aptly named 'IN THE SUMMERTIME'. A piece of rock/blues/country/jug/jazz/ and the most original sound I've heard for a year. It's on a maxi-single from MUNGO JERRY, the most devil-may-care music since LOVIN' SPOONFUL. Just watch this one move. Daily Sketch, 1970 MAXI - If you're looking for value for money, try the new maxi-single. Pye's Dawn label introduces it;a 7-inch 33 1/3 stereo disc selling at 9s 11d. One of these, by a group called MUNGO JERRY, plays for more than 14 minutes. The first track, 'IN THE SUMMERTIME,' is quite something - a blend of rock and reggae, jug band and Tyrannosaurus Rex. It deserves to be a maxi-hit. Mike Nevard, The Sun, 25th May, 1970. MUNGO JERRY: IN THE SUMMERTIME/MIGHTY MAN/DUST PNEUMONIA BLUES - (DAWN DNX2502). One of the first two maxi-singles released by Pye on their Dawn label. Roughly eight minutes per side in stereo plus fancy sleeve for 9s 11d. MUNGO JERRY make a great sound, incorporating, as the sleeve notes claim, everything from rock to jug. Their version of WOODY GUTHRIE's 'DUST PNEUMONIA BLUES' is a right rave-up with a tremendous barrelhouse piano and harmonica backing.Daily Mail, 23rd May, 1970. |

| HOLLYWOOD FESTIVAL - One hell of a commotion broke out during MUNGO JERRY's act. A group I'd never encountered previously, they did a storm and had to be re-booked for the following day. They started off sounding like a skiffle group but got into jug band music and country blues things, tearing the place apart. 'ROCK ISLAND LINE'and 'MIDNIGHT SPECIAL' were both very good, as was 'DUST PNEUMONIA BLUES'. The crowd kept yelling for 'IN THE SUMMERTIME', the new single which singer and lead guitarist RAY DORSET wrote, but things were going so well on the Sunday that the group didn't want to slow the action down and it was left to the disc jockey to play it at the end of the proceedings. Richard Green - NME, May 1970.
HOLLYWOOD FESTIVAL - MUNGO JERRY, as I said earlier were the surprise monsters! They did so well on Saturday afternoon that they played again on the Sunday evening. They are a combination of a skiffle group and a jug band. Acoustic guitar, banjo, washboard and piano in their line-up. They play happy, good-time music perfect for the Festival atmosphere in fact. They laugh a lot. Drink cider and beer on stage and really get an informal thing going. Their main attraction-a huge one-was that they got a cosy, intimate folk club-type atmosphere going at a big, open air show. They deserved all the accolades. Their future looks bright! Tony Norman, Music Now, May 30th, 1970. |

MUNGO JERRY - ROTTERDAM FESTIVAL 1970
| ROTTERDAM FESTIVAL - By eight o'clock in the evening everything had changed. We had heard, and quite warmly applauded, FOTHERINGAY with their pretty and talented JOAN BAEZ-style female singer, and their pleasing tasteful folk music; we had heard a Dutch drummer and an Indian sitar-player, and a Chicago group who clowned irrepressibly and made quantities of noise but no music, and some folk-singers. Then came MUNGO JERRY, the group whose song 'IN THE SUMMERTIME' came from nowhere into the top of the English charts a couple of weeks ago. They were unknown in Holland, as in Britain a month ago. While they were on the platform it seemed that everybody in the park assembled, everybody stood up, began to clap and dance, throw paper plates and toilet rolls in the air. Many followed Zacchaeus and climbed into the trees for a better view, and they were dancing as well, like the gatecrashers on the light-towers (anguished appeals from the excellent English announcer, Ian Knight, but in vain). During their last number, a gloriously solid piece of rock'n roll, the whole place had metamorphosed from lethargy into two miles of solid human vibrating electricity, total mass-commitment not for boring politics but for live music. For the rest of the night everyone was reverently recalling the name of MUNGO JERRY; if not the most inventive rock music I've heard, it was in context about the most inspiring, and it's nice that a British group did it without the benefit of an established reputation. William Mann, The Times, July 2nd 1970. |

| MUNGO JERRY - "Backing up their fantastic hit single comes their first album, 'MUNGO JERRY' on Dawn DNLS3008, complete with 3D specs with which to view the open-out inside cover photo. Such a gimmick is really not necessary. The contents are a continuation of the kind of music on their maxi-single, warm groovy stuff that's sure to please almost everyone. All new numbers on the LP. MUNGO JERRY are definitely here to stay! Music Press, 1970 THAT GOOD TIME MUNGO MUSIC - Despite their recent disappointing London debut at the Lyceum, MUNGO JERRY might just be succeeding in their task of bringing good-time music back to prominence.A spell of fine weather and the Hollywood Festival all helped, but they'd have made it anyway, judging by the eveidence of their first album. Most of it is better than their hit single, and there's a surprising amount of variety. They veer from rock'n roll parody (the classic 'BABY LET'S PLAY HOUSE') to jug band blues (JESSE FULLER's 'SAN FRANCISCO BAY BLUES') and the question of integrity and validity just never comes into it, because they're so obviously enjoying themselves and that makes it so much easier for the audience to enjoy it too. With the exception of 'DADDIE'S BREW', the songs are by singer/guitarist RAY DORSET, who's rollicking and frequently amusingly bawdy, and PAUL KING, whose things are rather more thoughtful. COLIN EARL wrote 'BREW,' and plays knockout piano on 'SAD EYED JOE.' Possibly the most extraordinary track is 'SEE ME,' which contains some horrifying screaming not recommended for those with faint hearts. KING's attractive 'MOVIN'ON' contains some nice hoedown violin by guest JOHNNY VAN DERRICK, and there's a good rolling instrumental called 'MOTHER*!*!*!BOOGIE.' This isn't an album which requires analysis but I'm sure it will bear repeated listenings. Melody Maker, July 25th, 1970. MORE HAPPY SOUNDS FROM MUNGO JERRY - MUNGO JERRY came to us 'IN THE SUMMERTIME', just like their great big hit. They brought a couple of new things along with them - a chart topping mini-LP and happy-go-lucky sound to put us in a holiday and festival mood. You can't put their sound into any particular bag, they take bits of everything and mix it into infectious music anyone can enjoy. Their LP 'MUNGO JERRY' (Dawn DNLS3008) is a usual size album full of entertainment. With such instruments as the kazoo, six and 12 string guitars, plus banjo, violin, piano and harpsichord in evidence on various tracks, it's a winner. Titles are 'BAY LET'S PLAY HOUSE', 'JOHNNY B.BADDE', 'SAN FRANCISCO BAY BLUES', 'SAD EYED JOE', 'MAGGIE', 'PEACE IN THE COUNTRY', SEE ME', MOVIN'ON', 'MY FRIEND', 'MOTHER*!*!*!BOOGIE', 'TRAMP' and 'DADDIES BREW'. Oh, and don't forget to take a look at the 3D picture inside the sleeve. It stands out, just like the jolly happy music of MUNGO JERRY. The Star, October, 1970. |

| MUNGO FOR FRANCE! - MUNGO JERRY leave for a five day French tour on November 20th, which includes a concert at the Paris Olympia when they will be presented with a gold disc for 1,000,000 sales of 'IN THE SUMMERTIME' in France. "During the tour they will film a special TV show for French television. Their single 'MAGGIE,'released last week in France, has jumped into the French charts at 20 in its first week. Music Press, 1970.
PET PRESENTS MUNGO GOLD - PETULA CLARK bedecked in a glittering green gown came on stage at the cavernous Paris, Olympia on Monday evening and presented MUNGO JERRY with a gold disc for more than a million sales in France of 'IN THE SUMMERTIME'. So far, more than six million copies of the Dawn single have been sold in various countries around the world. And at the time of writing the group has three records in the French Top 20 so it looks as though they may probably be receiving another very soon. One French record company executive said he had never known one record to sell so many copies in his country. After the presentation of the award by courtesy of Vogue Records, which distributes Dawn products in France, the group sauntered on stage arranged themselves in a line and sat down to face the audience. It could have been the beginning of a classical concert only their garb gave them away. Then DORSET's famous left leg began to thump up and down. A couple of moments later the whole audience responded by thumping their feet to the hill-billy type strains of 'MIDNIGHT SPECIAL'. "Merci beaucoup", Dorset said in very pigin French when he had finished bouncing around. "Anyone here speak English?" he asked pleadingly. No one really did to allow a conversation to develop but there was one common language - the music. Then the group, DORSET, PAUL KING, COLIN EARL and JOHN GODFREY, replacing an ailing MIKE COLE began thumping again and we went into 'HAVE A WHIFF ON ME', a cocaine play on LONNIE DONEGAN's 'HAVE A DRINK ON ME', 'IN THE SUMMERTIME' of course, another hit of theirs in France, 'MAGGIE', 'SOMEBODY STOLE MY WIFE', and 'MIGHTY MAN'. Many of their numbers are available on their first album released here a few months ago on Dawn. A new single is apparently going to be released here in the middle of January. It's another Dorset-penned song, as are most of them, but its title is being kept a secret until nearer the release date. For sure, the Paris concert was the best the Olympia has ever seen. It was certainly the most responsive audience in that venue I've ever seen. Vince James, Music Press, 1970. |
