MUNGO JERRY DIARY : 1974

On the back of two hit singles entered 1974 on the crest of a wave (again) and became a five piece band when former Gene Vincent guitarist Dick Middleton joined the band and pianist Ian Milne came in on piano. Another hit duly followed when 'Long Legged Woman Dressed In Black' entered the charts.

All the dates we have are listed but, we have a large gap between June and November, so if you can help with others, or in fact anything relevant to 1974, just give us a shout...

MUNGO JERRY : LONG LEGGED WOMAN DRESSED IN BLACK
(Released March 1974 - UK Chart position No.13)

MUNGO JERRY: LONG LEGGED WOMAN DRESSED IN BLACK - (Dawn)...

"Written by Ray Dorset, and with the good-humoured sort of pop for which the group is well known...it swings, and there is a reasonably catchy hook to it, and it's repetitive, and it's very bright. The thing is that you feel yourself foot-pounding along with it, without necessarily knowing why it's all undemanding or happening! But the Jerry-builders create good and undemanding pop records. Fair enough"?

CHART CERT

MUNGO JERRY: LONG LEGGED WOMAN DRESSED IN BLACK (Dawn)

"There seems to be a lot of these long legged women about these days - where are they all coming from, eh? This, as you might imagine is a teen-oriented choogler complete with a voice and drum sequence in the most voguish of contemporary manners. Perhaps Ray Dorset's voice isn't quite extreme enough to propel Mungo Jerry up among the Mud's and the Sweet's but one anticipates seeing this single somewhere in the charts one of these days. The predominant theme seems to be "every time I make a move she tells me no" and there are some fierce guitar breaks and a lot riotous drummery. By no means unpleasant".

CAPITOL RADIO LIVE TRANSMISSION : 1974

Who could forget Mungo Jerry's infamous appearance on Capitol Radio during 1974 (exact recording date not known) that resulted in a lifetime band for Ray. The reason? Performing one of their regular, at the time, numbers from the live show 'Little Bit Of Love' complete with risque lyrics.

It was in fact, a great recording featuring numbers such as 'Big Brown Eyes' and '1000 Miles' by what was one of the very best Mungo Jerry line-ups. The set was later made available through the fan club with Ray playing the first two numbers solo.

MUNGO JERRY : ALL DRESSED UP AND NO PLACE TO GO

(Released November 1974)

MUNGO JERRY: ALL DRESSED UP AND NO PLACE TO GO - (Dawn DNS1092)...

"Good value for fans this one, being in the form of an E.P, stands for extended play, a single containing more than two numbers. There are four on this one, the other three being 'Shake 'Til I Break', 'Too Fast To Live And Too Young To Die' and 'Burnin' Up'. The covers says rock'n roll with Mungo Jerry and a bit of a surprise. Lots of harmonies and more of a funkier sound, obviously. Wouldn't have thought it was quite right as single material, more of an album track, but it's alright for all that.".

MUNGO JERRY: ALL DRESSED UP AND NO PLACE TO GO (Dawn)

"Maybe Ray Dorset was born ten years too late. He's got one of the most distinctive voices in the business and is a great rock'n roll singer, probably the only modern-day revialist who sounds truly authentic. This is one of those maxi-singles that Mungo Jerry seems to specialise in, for in addition to the title track, there's 'Shake 'Til I Break', 'Too Fast To Live And Too Young To Die' and 'Burnin' Up'. They're all out and out rockers and it's good value if you want a knees-up with granny in the kitchen. I suspect however, that Teds and Roy Wood apart, everyone's a bit bored with the rock'n roll nostalgia bit, and the actual songs here aren't that strong to revive the revival".
