THE DOGHOUSE SKIFFLE GROUP
|
THE DOG HOUSE SKIFFLE GROUP were formed in 1991 when KEITH CHEESEMAN (guitar) and GARRY PULLEN (washboard) got extremely drunk one night in the old Jailhouse Club on Norfolk Street, Hull. While discussing their mutual boredom with the music scene, the pair decided that the time was right for them to try their hand at something a little different, after throwing round many alcohol induced and 'ree-diculous' ideas, Garry mentioned the word - SKIFFLE! Keith perked up, "as it happens", he said, "I do believe that I own a washboard and I have a friend who works for a removals firm who can get me a tea chest".
Soon the washboard and the tea chest being the main tools of trade for any self-respecting skiffle group, were
acquired. Long term friend of Garry's, ALAN HARMAN was recruited as being the only one daft enough to play the tea chest bass, or 'Doghouse bass', as it was affectionately known in the original skiffle heyday (thus giving rise to the groups name). The trio then set about raiding the old skiffle catalogue from LONNIE DONEGAN, LEADBELLY, etc, which they perform from time to time - "just for a laugh" - but for some strange reason, unbeknown to the group, audiences seem to love it! |

The Dog House Skiffle Group first came into contact with RAY DORSET in September 1999 at the Processed Pea Folk Club, Etton, Nr;Hull where they backed Ray and MICK FRAMPTON on what was a truly memorable gig (see the review from #16 of Mun-go For It! on the features page). It was a chance encounter that was so successful, it was repeated again at the Springhead in Hull (review from #17 again on the features page), and at the 'Pea' at later MJ appearances.
The guys have to date recorded three albums - 'HONK', 'THE BLACK ALBUM' and 'MONGREL MUSIC'. Click here to visit the Dog House Skiffle Group's Official Site. |
