CANDY DREAMS - A REVIEW
|
The eagerly awaited brand new MUNGO JERRY studio album, CANDY DREAMS has finally been completed. As you are all aware, it's been a long time coming and I think it would be fair to say, it's gonna surprise a lot of people. Having received a promo CD of the album from Ray, and playing it a few times, I'm still struggling to come up with an accurate description of what I am hearing. That's not a criticism at all, because I have enjoyed listening to it - it's just different! Ray describes it as "chill out & party" and that's just about right. I thought that I would give you a track-by-track run down, so here goes; |
| HIPPIE HIGH HI | Maybe my favourite track on the album. I heard an early demo of this one and didn't like it too much, but put the band on it and it is an entirely different song. Great guitars! Is this reminiscing back to his hippie days. Reminds me of 'ROCKIN'ON THE ROAD' in places. |
| TALK IS CHEAP | After first hearing this one, I did tell Ray that this one was the best track - maybe it is! There are a few on 'CANDY DREAMS' that will become MUNGO classics and this is certainly one. Great panpipes sound in the middle. |
| DO YOU WANT TO LIVE WITH ME | Slower tempo but nice song, not bad at all. Reminds me of a TOTO song with the drum intro. Again, I've heard this one before in demo form. Mr.D in melancholy mood on this one. |
| WITH A GIRL LIKE YOU | Many of you will have heard this one before. It was the B-side of the 'RED LEATHER & CHROME' single released in Scandinavia a few years back, and it also features on some issues of the 'SNAKEBITE' album. Slow, dreamy ballad that has been part of the stage show for some time. |
| IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT | Another song to 'chill out' to. Ray almost seems to talk his way through the lyrics, but it has a kind of hypnotic quality. Wouldn't have been out of place on the 'BOOGIE UP' album. |
| JUMP UP AND DOWN | One of the best tracks on the album. A bouncy Afro-Caribbean sound which seems to be part of the bands make-up these days. I dare you to keep still on this one. Captures the feel of the current line-up this one. |
| LOVE INN | So laid back, it almost falls over. The sentiment and theme reminds me of 'QUIET MAN' from the 'IMPALA SAGA' album. Grows on you this one! |
| ARE YOU READY FOR SEX? | As the title suggests, a moody, sultry number that is popular with MICK FRAMPTON in particular. DEREK WADESON once said that this was one of Ray's worst songs. Doesn't do much for me either, but better version than the first demo I heard of it. |
| SO LONELY | Love this one! Very bluesy really, and sounds great played loud. Again, great guitar work. Wouldn't sound out of place on the blues album or 'SNAKEBITE' for that matter. Can't wait to hear it played live. I really like this one a lot! |
| WHERE ARE YOU? | One of Ray's best ever songs - brilliant! Didn't HAL CARTER say that this was his later day 'COLD BLUE EXCURSION'. In the same vein as 'HOW CAN I LIVE A LIE'. |
| RED LEATHER & CHROME | New version of the popular stage number. I've got to say that I don't like this one as much as the 'SNAKEBITE' track. The original seemed just right. |
| PARTYLAND | Would make a great single. Slightly preferred the first version I heard on a preview tape but I still love this song. Another in the 'Afro-Caribbean' mode and very lively. |
| SUGAR IN THE BOWL | Again, not as good as the 'SNAKEBITE' version. Kind of a disco-rapping treatment, doesn't work for me - see what you think! |
| FEELS LIKE I'M IN LOVE | Slower, sing-a-long version of the KELLY MARIE No.1, complete with honky-tonk piano. Ray really likes this version, and so do I. You're going to love it! |
| YELLOW GLOVES | 'YELLOW GLOVES' (IN THE SNOW), whatever - for those of you who weren't able to get hold of the single released earlier this year in Europe, here it is. MUNGO in gypsy mode, which I like. Similar style to 'IT'S A SECRET' and 'LANA'. |
| SUNSHINE ARMY | Re-working of 'Toon Army' from the TOON TRAVEL single. Last minute inclusion on the album. It's gonna be a MUNGO anthem - simply brilliant! |
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
|
So what's in a name? MUNGO JERRY - remember them? 'IN THE SUMMERTIME', 'LADY ROSE', and what's the other one called? 'LONG COOL WOMAN IN A BLACK DRESS', that was it! I think every MUNGO fan at sometime in their life has encountered hearing a conversation like that. In fact the other week, I was promoting a brewery fund raiser when the video screen moved onto RAY DORSET and the lads giving 'ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT' loads. "He's skint, him you know, that 'Ray Dorsey' fellow", spluttered a drunk at the bar. "I heard
he couldn't play a chord", said his mate - Oh, piss off, I thought!
That is the problem a lot of 'once famous' artists suffer from, so how do they go about promoting something new - in this case, new MUNGO albums, 'CANDY DREAMS' and the blues project. Do you feature twelve songs in the old hit days style, do you try to bring it up to date and be 'modern'. Or do you fall in-between two stools and end up doing neither.
I don't think there is an easy answer to be found with MUNGO live being a different sound to a lot of the recorded product. Playing it live is one thing,
transferring that to an album could also be very daunting. From the demo tracks I've heard of the two new albums, I'm glad Ray has taken up the challenge and put together some really well crafted product. Every track may not satisfy old fans/new fans/gig goers, because it's RAY DORSET now, it's what he wants to be heard, so accept it. I have my favourite tracks, there are a couple of songs I don't like one bit, then again, if I recorded an album, Ray wouldn't like half of that either! So what does Ray have to prove? Nothing is the answer. RAY DORSET is putting out MUNGO JERRY albums in the 90's, that are not the 70's re-visited - they are now and are worth hearing, and hoping someone, somewhere in business has the clout to make sure that enough people hear them to make a difference. KEEP ON ROCKING RAY!

THE BLUES ALBUM
|
November - '97 that is - should see the release of the new MUNGO JERRY blues album, 'OLD SHOES,NEW JEANS'. Was it really back in issue 7, August'95 when I first gave out the initial track listing.
Performed very much in a 'live' sounding style, similar to 'SNAKEBITE', it is a collection of brand new RAY DORSET compositions, and new re-recordings of some old numbers from Ray's past. Track by track; |
| P.A.R.T.Y.O | A re-working of a very old song of Ray's dating back to the 60's |
| BEAUTIFUL WIDOW | For me, the best song on the album sees Ray sounding real mean with some hard hitting lyrics and a similar rhythm to 'OPEN UP'. |
| BIRTHDAY BLUES | Remember this one from the PROCESSED PEA tape? |
| ONE MORE NIGHT WITHOUT YOU | A better version for me than the one used on the KATMANDU album. |
| BOTTLE OF BEER | The old B-side of 'HELLO NADINE' and again, a much better version. |
| BOOGIE ALL THE WAY HOME | Sounding lyrically similar to 'QUIET MAN' from the 'IMPALA SAGA' album. Great for driving this one. |
| WIGGLE AND WAGGLE | Another that has been around for a while but once again, a much better version that sounds very ROLLING STONES-ish to me. |
| NEW PAIR OF JEANS | The title track I suppose. |
| UNLOVED,UNWANTED | One of my favourites - nice riff! |
| I'VE GOT THE BLUES | The longest track on the album, a real old traditional blues number. |
| ALL THAT A WOMAN SHOULD BE | From the 1977, 'LOVIN'IN THE ALLEYS, FIGHTIN' IN THE STREETS' album. |
