FANZINE#6

FAN CLUB POLL

One of the suggestions thrown up for the '25 years celebrations' was to conduct another MUNGO JERRY record poll. Some of you may remember that Derek did one a few years ago, and in the 70's, MUNGO fan, JOHN JUSTICE put one together from the fan club when it was run from London.

Both of the previous surveys were concerned with finding the 'best' MUNGO JERRY song, in the opinion of the fan club members. This time around, I thought that it would be fun to take it a bit further and introduce some new categories. It could well be useful in showing Ray what the fans think and what they would like to see happening with MUNGO JERRY.

To help you, here are the previous results from the surveys mentioned above;

KNEBWORTH - JUNE 4TH, 1994

No this wasn't another outdoor rock concert but the occasion was the world's biggest gathering of MG cars at the annual MG Owners Club rally, held in the grounds of the magnificent Knebworth estate. This particular Saturday was also one of the wettest days of the year and having originally planned to camp on the rally site with my two boys, I chickened out and phoned up to book us into one of the few remaining rooms at the local Post House for the night.

Out on the rally field, having toured the gleaming cars fast becoming stranded in the deepening mud, we trudged into the huge marquee, centre of the evenings attraction, and soon enough bumped into the band preparing on and around the stage. As tends to be necessary at MUNGO gigs, my eyes scanned the group members, checking for familiar faces; RAY DORSET, TIM GREEN, LES CALVERT, STEVE JONES and SIMON BAKER. Good! No changes since last time and my favourite line-up in recent years.

LES CALVERT was fully entering the spirit of things as he'd turned up in his girlfriends MG - and promptly parked it inside the marquee to protect its valued body from the ravages on the incessant rain. The boys and I disappeared to get film for the camera and check into the local hotel - glad that we wouldn't need to erect the tent, let alone spend the night in it, under the leaden skies.

Around 8 o'clock, back we came, full of the usual anticipation, into the marquee. Around 1,000 MG fans were here and they were already rocking well before MUNGO came on stage. 'KILLER QUEEN' warmed things up nicely with a lively FREDDIE MERCURY tribute, and then THE RUBETTES took us through their seventies routine.

Having said the audience looked nicely warmed up, in actual fact, they had to keep dancing in order to keep warm: The marquee was FREEZING! Evidently, a heating system was not considered necessary - bad move!

Around 10.40 however, MUNGO took the stage and 'SOMEBODY STOLE MY WIFE' instantly reverberated around the stately environs of Knebworth. As well as a succession of the major hits - interspersed with regular stage incursions by inebriated revellers - we were treated to a nicely relaxed version of 'BOTTLE OF BEER' and a reggae sounding interpretation of 'KNOCKING ON HEAVENS DOOR'. 'RED LEATHER & CHROME' and the fearsome, 'ROCK'N ROLL', both from 'SNAKEBITE' kept the pace up. 'NUTBUSH CITY LIMITS' was the funkiest I have EVER heard it played. Just brilliant!

Ray's red silk shirt came off over his shoulders at one point - only to be rapidly replaced when he realised just how cold it really was, even on stage! 'LET'S WORK TOGETHER' blasted out in a fine sequence of covering numbers, but all too soon, on the stroke of midnight, things drew to a close. No time for an encore unfortunately, and my only grouse was that we hadn't heard 'MIGHTY MAN' during the evening. Oh well, my kazoo would have to wait for another airing.

Super sound, and a good gig; but I wish that it had been a bit warmer in there!

MIKE BERRY.
