“either with lots of orchestration as they had been doing, and sounding like ELO, or more to my roots with skiffle and great honest sounds like MUNGO JERRY" - JOHN LENNON

I have the sad news to report that Ray's former manager ROLAND DUNNE is gravely ill. Roland is a big mate of mine and someone I first got to know back in 1971-ish when he ran the GRIDDLEBONE Club, which was a kind of un-official fan club. It was amazing as he seemed to get his hands on some very rare MUNGO JERRY collectables. Of late, he had just taken over as LONNIE DONEGAN JR's manager. All MUNGO fans thoughts are with ROLAND and his family. |
![]() It's always good to hear from Joe calling from France for one of our chats, but our latest natter was a little different. Joe informed me that he had suffered a stroke on Christmas Eve and spent Christmas Day and the following week in hospital receiving treatment. UPDATE:12/02/10 - Spoke to Joe again last night and he is just fine, though not looking forward to going back to hospital to have more work done. It's not because of the treatment - "they stuck me in a room with a load of old boys"!. He has hooked up with another band over in Rennes, playing double bass and shows no sign of slowing down just yet! |

HOW DID WEYFEST GO? Great, we were on Saturday night after JETHRO TULL, IAN ANDERSON came onstage to wish me a good show, earlier I had just reminded him that I auditioned for his band after the departure of MICK ABRAHAMS and that I was onstage directly before him about two years previously at an open air show in Calw, Germany that took place outside the house of the birthplace of one of my favourite authors, HERMAN HESSE. YOU HAVE ALREADY BEEN ASKED BACK FOR NEXT YEAR? COLIN WEBB called me to say a big thanks for our show, it was great as we went on directly after JETHRO TULL and I was wondering if the audience would stay with us, they did, we went down absolutely great and played about fifteen minutes of encores. ANY OTHER THINGS LINED UP FOR NEXT YEAR? I want to do some forty years of 'IN THE SUMMERTIME' gigs, something will be planned for the Processed Pea, I will do the LA NAMM show in January, and I have gigs already booked with CHRISTOPH STEINBACH and HEINI ALBART. IS GUILFEST STILL ON? I have not confirmed anything as yet for Guilfest, could be that my son James will be booking one of the stages there again for 2010. YOU RECENTLY HELPED CELEBRATE 40 YEARS OF THE PROCESSED PEA FOLK CLUB, HOW WAS THAT? Always good to play at the Pea, and this time it was again different as MIKE COLE and GARRY PULLEN joined me onstage, not much room to move but good fun, as usual, no sound check, no rehearsals and no set list, just how I like it. The groove and the vibe are all that matters to me. I WAS THERE AS YOU KNOW, AND REALLY LIKED THE SOUND YOU CREATED WITH MIKE COLE ON BASS AND GARRY PULLEN OF THE DOG HOUSE SKIFFLE GROUP ON WASHBOARD, IS THAT A LINE-UP THAT MAY MAKE A RE-APPEARANCE, AN ALBUM WOULD BE GOOD ALONG THE LINES OF ‘NO FRILLS’? I never thought about it, but it would be a good idea if I could find the right material for the project. I will give it some thought. I have a lot of recording projects to undertake and this one would also be good for the catalogue. WASN’T IT GREAT TO SEE RAY CLEGG AGAIN? Yes, it has been a very long time, about twenty seven years, although we have spoken briefly on the phone. We have a lot to speak about.
IT SEEMS LIKE EVERYONE IS ASKING ME WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE ‘COOL JESUS’ ALBUM? The album is ready now but I have not finalised the distribution, it will be released first in Germany, I have a meeting in Berlin in November regarding this, many people have suggested that 'GOING UP THE RIVER' should be released as a single for promotion. DO YOU HAVE ANY DEFINITE PLANS FOR THE THREE UK THEATRE GIGS IN THE AUTUMN? ALAN CLAYSON will join me onstage with the UK band, he will also do a spot to open the show and I will introduce him, BRUCE BRAND and MIKE COLE will also play with the band. I will do some of the hits, blues stuff, stuff from 'NAKED FROM THE HEART' and maybe 'HA-HA THIS-A-WAY' and the PROSPECTS T.V theme.
YOU’VE BEEN RECORDING RECENTLY HAVEN’T YOU? I have been recording in Vienna with HEINI, we put down eleven titles, this will be the 'EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES' album, some songs I have recorded before but in a different way. I’m hoping to get the album completed by the middle of November. Some of the tracks will have a brass section and gospel choir. All the songs are very long, lots of jamming going on, should be very good. I SEE THAT THE ON-LINE SHOP IS SELLING A COUPLE OF NEW ITEMS, A LIVE RECORDING OF A GIG ON THE U.S.A TOUR IN 1970, AND A DVD OF THE RAGNAROCK FESTIVAL IN 1973? The USA CD was not for sale at the moment, they were meant to be given to yourself, Derek and others interested in the MUNGO stuff, I never got the chance to speak to Derek about it, I will give him a call now that he is back from holiday. The RAGNAROCK package is really good, it is only available from Norway at the moment, it went to No 1 in the sales chart there. It could be that I do some gigs with this line up in Australia, Bob (DAISLEY), John (COOK), Tim (REEVES) and myself have been speaking about it. NEXT YEAR SEES THE CHANCE TO CELEBRATE 40 YEARS OF MUNGO JERRY, IS ANYTHING PLANNED YET? I’m working on a few things, could be that I do a tour of small theatres; the three that I’m doing this year are a tryout. WHAT ELSE IS HAPPENING? The legal battle with the Cohens goes on and takes up a lot of time and effort, there are now more people involved and it looks as though that a very large media project will develop from it.
I am also building catalogue for the new companies and it is a lot of fun. I have recorded a couple of tracks on my own and more will be done to make an album, the title will be MUNGOMATIC. I am also planning to do more guest spots, the UK band album, and HEINI asked me to record an album of swing/blues/jazz with many standard covers as he has invited me to do a tour of jazz clubs in Austria. The gigs that I did with him recently were a great success.
STEVE PHIPPS contacted me about doing a book too, this will cover my complete involvement with the music business celebrating forty years of 'IN THE SUMMERTIME'. Steve’s latest book has had very good reviews; it is about the footballer, PAUL GASCOIGNE.
Funny enough, Steve’s father worked at Timex in Feltham, I don’t know if we met, I was working in the research lab there.
LONNIE DONEGAN JNR joined me onstage at MIKE COLE'S Goolglies Jazz Club and also at Weyfest; I’m planning to do some recording with him too. He is being looked after by my old mate ROLAND DUNNE.
I want to thank everybody for the help and info that they have given me in relation to the Cohen investigation.
I’m also expecting to finally have a jam with PAUL KING, he did not make it to Weyfest due to circumstances beyond his control, I’m pretty confident that it will happen before too long.
I’m doing a solo gig at the Farnham Maltings as Friends of Weyfest, I have already asked Mike and Bruce, so I will ask Paul too. The gig is on Dec. 18th 2009.
JOHN HORNHAVER has taken a lot of footage at the 'COOL JESUS' line-up gig in Barsinghausen, he did an excellent job videoing the Esbjerg gigs, could be that we can get a DVD out of it, there is also a lot of unseen footage of the MUNGO JERRY BLUESBAND to sort out, we have all of the stuff from the Canal 21 show too.
Marc has been busy in the U.S making more great MUNGO JERRY videos and I have had a good meeting with DAVE CASH about a planned project together.
I have also been approached to do a version of 'IN THE SUMMERTIME', for the forty years, with two world famous U/S hip-hop artists, more about that another time if it comes together.

MUNGO JERRY MEETS LONNIE DONEGAN
RAY DORSET's gig at MIKE COLE's GOOGLIES JAZZ CLUB on the 21st of August was, not surprisingly a great success with special guest, LONNIE DONEGAN JR joining Ray, and MIKE COLE's band, on stage for the first time. LONNIE JR's manager, ROLAND DUNNE has been in touch to say, "Ray and Lonnie had a great gig last night (friday 21/8/09). Ray was inspired and Lonnie was on form. And that was after barely a few practice songs! "We are already discussing various ways of future collaboration. Main thing is they loved playing together and Mike's band were a great support. Audience were up on their feet; unheard of in a jazz club"! LONNIE JR has accepted an invite to appear at the Faversham Kent Hop Festival on Sunday 6th September following on from his guest appearance with Ray last week which was very well received and has led to an upsurge of interest in live appearances. He is also booked to appear on Saturday 5th September at the Weyfest in Farnham, Surrey alongside JETHRO TULL and MUNGO JERRY. A leading rock magazine is preparing a feature on LONNIE JR, focusing on the Heritage aspect of both his Dad's music and how LONNIE JR is now carrying on and developing a band in the spirit of LONNIE SR, rather than being just a tribute band. Ray has been on radio on the DAVE CASH show talking, amongst other things, about the get-together with LONNIE JR, and you can listen by clicking here Roland added,"LONNIE DONEGAN laid the ground out for the ROLLING STONES, BEATLES and pretty much all of British Rock and Blues. Of course the skiffle sound was single handedly revived by MUNGO JERRY in the 1970's so there are huge affinities for both fans & band members of MUNGO JERRY with LONNIE DONEGAN. "If any Mungo Jerry fans want a good skiffle band at a reasonable cost for their events, I am sure I can arrange a favourable rate for bookings for the rest of 2009". ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT
Last week in Australia, a new TV advert was released which includes footballer, HARRY KEWELL, of Australia, Liverpool and Leeds United, and now playing in Turkey. The music is MUNGO JERRY, playing 'ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT, and the advert is about soccer, for a company called Solo that have been supporting Australian soccer since 1973, the year 'ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT' was released. The advert goes on for one minute, about kids playing football with squashed cans, with 'ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT' the main focus, and the ending is HARRY KEWELL walking into the Olympic stadium in Sydney. Thanks goes to BOB GILPIN, over in Oz, and Alan in Sydney who left a message in the guestbook, for the info. Thanks guys! CLICK HERE TO VIEW SOLO ADVERT |

AIX EN PROVENCE - 1970
Hi everybody who is interested and prepared to help with a long on-going and expensive investigation. It came to my notice some time ago that a certain number of my master recordings were being licensed out for compilations around the world without my prior knowledge or consent, to third parties by persons and or firms that had no rights to do so. Further more, not I or any of my companies have received payment or statements in lieu of this activity. This situation has been reported to the relevant authorities and it would be very helpful for my case if anybody out there that has purchased or has access to any of these items would inform me of the title of the compilation, if it is a multi-artist compilation or a MUNGO JERRY compilation, if possible when and where it was purchased, what label it is on and a scan of the complete insert. This also applies to tracks from the album, 'A CASE FOR THE BLUES', that I recorded with PETER GREEN, JEFF WHITTAKER and VINCENT CRANE. In particular, I am seeking information on tracks that have been licensed out by the following companies which happen to be companies owned and controlled by the Cohen family, Eliot and Joanne, and the names of which, but not limited to, are as follows, Sound and Vision Management Ltd, OVC Media Ltd, AMI Media Ltd, Waveffect Ltd, Associated Music Ltd. It would also be of interest to me to have the same information regarding, but not limited to the following artists: LES McKEOWN/BAY CITY ROLLERS,JOHN DU CANN/ATOMIC ROOSTER, DEREK DALLENGER, KELLY MARIE, BRUCE AND BONGO, JESSE GREEN, THE ATTACK, THE TROGGS, PETER GREEN, GEORDIE (feat BRIAN JOHNSON).

RARE 1971 MUNGO JERRY POSTER
JJ in France has found a poster advertising a MUNGO JERRY in Nice in February 1971. He has other copies (nearly MINT) and they are available to fans for 15 Euros (inc post & packing). They are NOT reprints, but original posters and as you can see, very colourful and ideal for framing. |

I have now introduced a new section for the website which is called THE FANS! Basically, we ask fans of MUNGO JERRY a few questions about their love for their favourite band. I'm starting to get a few responses in, and will contact everyone in the MUNGO JERRY database, and here I have the first reply which was from Marc in New Jersey. Marc, who many of you will know puts together those wonderful MUNGO video's on tube and I have included a link to his latest, and best in my opinion, at the end of the piece. What I require is; |
![]() YOUR NAME? |
We are still awaiting a release date for the forthcoming MUNGO JERRY album, 'COOL JESUS'. The album was recorded in 2006 with THE GOODTIME GAMBLERS musicians - WINNIE MARTIN (Bass), TORSTEN LUEDERWALDT (Keyboards, banjo), MARTIN TROIKE (Drums, washboard) - at the Graswege Studio, Hanover, and engineered by KLAUS PETER'DOC' REINICKE. For me, BRUCE BRAND has done a brilliant job with the sleeve design once again with more than a nod to the 1972 album 'BOOT POWER'.
Tracks are; COOL JESUS/JOHN HENRY/FAR AWAY/LET'S ROCK/GIVE US A SONG/HELLO BABY/JUST HER WAY/GOING UP THE RIVER/YOU CAN GET IT IF YOU WANT IT/I LIE AWAKE (A Song To Jesus)/RED LEATHER & CHROME/LUCKY GIRL/I WANNA LIVE IN THE SUN/WE ARE THE SAME/PRAYING SO HARD/HE'S GOT THE WHOLE WORLD IN HIS HANDS/MAMA DON'T ALLOW/GIVE US A SONG (Refrain) |
