September 8th, 2009 and another trip to the Processed Pea, located in the village of Etton, near Hull to celebrate 40 magical years of great gigs with organisers, MARTIN PEIRSON and STUART BELL. They had asked MUNGO JERRY to make a special appearance and all available tickets sold out weeks, or even months ago. Despite MUNGOMANIA advertising the gig as Ray backed by MIKI FRAMPTON, Ray was actually on stage with original MUNGO bassist MIKE COLE, and GARRY PULLEN, washboard player with the legendary DOG HOUSE SKIFFLE GROUP, who have sadly split (please sort it out guys, think of the fun you're/we are missing). We (Micky Rose and I) were a bit late in setting off and only arrived at the gig at around 8.45, and after having a quick chat with GARRY PULLEN, who strangely seemed pleased to see me (there's always one), I caught sight of Ray chatting to a couple in the adjoining bar and made my way through to say hello. The couple he was talking to were none other than RAY CLEGG, and his wife HANNE. Who's RAY CLEGG some of you may ask? Well, he was tour manager for MUNGO JERRY throughout much of the 70's and very well known to me. I just didn't recognise him at all, as those black curly locks of old were replaced by shorter, dare I say it greyer stuff. Once the penny dropped, I can't tell you how great it was to see him again and talk about days gone by. The gig itself was superb, with Ray, Mike and Garry belting out a wonderful sound. I did intend to jot down the set list, but didn't have pen and paper to hand but from memory - LET'S ROLL BABY/SAN FRANCISCO BAY BLUES/HAVE A WHIFF ON ME/TAKE ME BACK/ROCK ISLAND LINE/MAKE ME HAPPY/LADY ROSE/DUST PNEUMONIA BLUES/IN THE SUMMERTIME/FEELS LIKE I'M IN LOVE/BABY JUMP/MAMA DON'T ALLOW NO WASHBOARD PLAYED IN HERE - were all included. Ray did suffer from the occasional electric shock from the mike, with 'CLEGGY' itching to get up on stage to help him out. The problem persisted throughout the second half of the show, but didn't disrupt things too much, and a great time was had by all. Backed by double bass and washboard, the gig had an early MUNGO feel to it, and to me a very special sound. Great thanks go to MARTIN and STUART, helping us MUNGOMANIACS out with tickets, and making us feel welcome as always. Cheers guys! Thanks also to MICKY ROSE, ANDY HARRISON and RAY CLEGG for the photographs. |
