This is Tim Ogard from Seattle, I'm an old compadre of RAY DORSET. I lived in England in the late 70's, and ran around Europe playing the saxophone. I had the immense priviledge of opening for Ray on the Poland tour in August 1978, when I was playing sax with a British R'n B/Soul group called LADY LOVE. The day I first met Ray, in the Hotel Bristol in Warsaw, happened to be the day his son James was born. I didn't realise at the time that this was the first major rock act to play behind the Iron Curtain, I was 21 years old and having way too much fun
to contemplate rock history.
Here are some photos of Ray at his recent Seattle gig, the Salmon Festival, actually in Issaquah, Washington State, USA. The event was put on by another Englishman, DAVID HARRIS, a great guy who asked me to pass these photos along to you guys after I sent them to him.
Ray flew in Saturday, performed Sunday, on Monday he stayed around and David took us for lunch and then on a tour of Paul Allen's "Experience Music Project", which was originally intended to be a JIMI HENDRIX museum and became more of a rock'n roll museum in Seattle (Jimi is a Seattle native). There are photos of Ray, David and I at the 'wall of guitars' and at an exhibit telling the story of Jimi playing the Isle of Wight circa 1970. In the photo, Ray is telling the story of having breakfast with Jimi the morning of the gig, and how his drummer at the time, ROGER EARL (Colin's brother, long since with FOGHAT) was narrowly edged out of Jimi's gig by MITCH MITCHELL.
Ray is the same great guy he always was, and he rocks just as hard as he did when I travelled with MUNGO JERRY in the 70's. We had gotten back in touch about 5 years ago, at that time he sent me a copy of 'ADULTS ONLY', which is one of his best works to my mind. He hasn't lost a step. We had a fantastic time. It was great of Ray to come all this way, he put on a great show and really enjoyed himself.
Best wishes,
Tim Ogard, Seattle |
