Both RAY DORSET and myself thought that it would be a good idea to set up a new page devoted to the fans of MUNGO JERRY, where I basically ask a few set questions. How long have you been a fan? What got you into the band? Favourite song? That sort of thing. |
THE FANS

YOUR NAME? |
YOUR NAME? Fast forwarding over the years, I saw the band in various locations and with the ever changing line ups. Once I turned up in Quiberon, Brittany with my sister, another gig was in Bournemouth but life was moving on and I lost touch with what was happening with MUNGO JERRY. The records languished more often on the shelf but I still played them from time to time and they always gave me a lift and a smile.
Sooo, checking the web earlier this summer. The guys are playing a gig not far from me. It had been 25 years since I’d last seen them so carpe diem and I put it in my diary. Held at The Polish Club in Amersham, I toodled along. MUNGO JERRY was announced, I moved to the side of the stage so I could get a good view, expecting that a lot of people would be getting up immediately but no, there I was, rather vibrant in a bright turquoise kaftan and everyone else was still sitting down. Shrugs, ah well, at least I could get a good view!!!!
Banter, songs, I danced, lots of others danced too. I sang along, every time a ‘Guess which song this is’ question was asked, I murmured the correct title, rather bashfully but I was obviously an uber fan! After, of course, I wandered backstage and found Ray, had a chat about music, band history. We had a picture taken together and I just love the happy faces.
So, this summer, I’m making up for lost time and have a list of gigs I’d like to see of MUNGO JERRY and the various offspring bands. I had the great pleasure of seeing both MUNGO JERRY sets at Guilfest and have managed to get one of the last few tickets for Weyfest. Last night I saw PAUL KING with SKELETON CREW and found myself thumping the jangle stick thing with the band – that made me very, very happy and I was rather effusive after when thanking Paul, I was nothing like the confident, conservative, business-suited woman that is my usual guise but a tongue-tied (and slightly less than sober) beaming long term fan who'd regressed some decades in age! Not sure which other gigs I’ll be at this year yet but if you see a woman in a green fedora with a black rose pinned to the hatband – that’ll be me.

YOUR NAME? Colin Fern. LOCATION Burton On-Trent, Staffs. WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTO MUNGO JERRY? I first got into MUNGO JERRY in the spring of 1970 after my exams but before the end of term, I was listening to the 'IN THE SUMMERTIME' maxi none stop. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE SONG(S)? Favourite song is a difficult one but three of my favourites are, 'COMING BACK TO YOU WHEN THE TIME COMES', 'LADY ROSE' and 'I MISS YOU'. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE-UP? The best line up was the original one. FAVOURITE ALBUM? All the early albums were great and also 'CANDY DREAMS' but they are all good. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SEEN THE BAND LIVE? Only seen them once at Bailey's in Derby must have been the mid-seventies. FAVOURITE GIG? This will also be my favourite gig. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE? Just want Ray to keep on going. Like many people I lost touch of MUNGO JERRY after the mid-seventies but thanks to all the websites, I am now back on track and slowly purchasing the CD'S I missed from the on-line shop. |

![]() YOUR NAME? Bengt Hertzman. LOCATION Helsingborg in Southern Sweden. WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTO MUNGO JERRY? As for many others, when I heard 'IN THE SUMMERTIME' in June 1970. It was so fresh and something completely new! I bought the album and after that I been a fan all the years. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE SONG(S)? I have several favourites. I think my absolute favourite MUNGO JERRY tune is 'LADY ROSE'. That song has a happy feeling and I can hear it on and on.. Other favourites are 'SIMPLE THINGS', 'MY GIRL & ME', 'MY OWN COUNTRY', 'YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE IN THE ARMY TO FIGHT IN THE WAR', 'COMING BACK TO YOU WHEN THE TIME COMES', 'GOING UP THE RIVER', 'HOW CAN I LIVE A LIE'. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE-UP? Hard to compare them but the 1974 line-up with Ray, BOB DAISLEY, IAN MILNE, DICK MIDDLETON and DAVE BIDWELL was great, I also like the 'SNAKEBITE' line-up and especially the one with TIM GREEN, JAMES DAVIS, STEVE JONES and MATT ROUND. It seemed that they could play almost everyting and it was a pity that they not record an album with Ray before they split. FAVOURITE ALBUM? 'BOOT POWER', I think it stands the test of time very good and it´s really an 'ALBUM' and not only a couple of songs. I also like 'NAKED FROM THE HEART' and 'WHEN SHE COMES, SHE RUNS ALL OVER ME' very much. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SEEN THE BAND LIVE? I have only seen the band live once, in Denmark 1987 so that´s my favourite gig. FAVOURITE GIG? See above. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE? It´s seems to happen a lot right now, Ray is playing with different musicians and MUNGO are now playing festivals again. I hope that MUNGO are going to play much more in musical theatres and that Ray and the band plays more less known and new songs and not only the old hits. Why not an acoustic set and storytelling about a long and exciting career. I also hope that the 'COOL JESUS' album will be released soon and most of all I hope that Ray records 'THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES' album with a complete band. It`s nice with albums that have been recorded almost live in the studio but I really long for a well produced album full of new songs and good musicians as Alan, Torsten, Mike and more. |
![]() YOUR NAME? John K Hornhaver. LOCATION Nykøbing Falster, Denmark. WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTO MUNGO JERRY? I was 10-12 years old, I spent a weekend at my Uncle and Aunt's house, and of course my cousins. My Uncle had some 45's laying on a table and one of them was the 'IN THE SUMMERTIME' and 'MIGHTY MAN' single. I asked him to hear the record and made a lifetime interest in MUNGO JERRY. Later on, I made contact on the telephone with Ray, I wanted to say hi and got the number from Ray's mother, after asking telephone information, and ended up talking to Ray, and still have contact with Ray. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE SONG(S)? Favourite song? Even after playing it day in and day out, ask my family? 'IN THE SUMMERTIME', and it's difficult, but latest favourite, 'I WANNA LIVE IN THE SUN', from 'COOL JESUS' is certainly one. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE-UP? Well I really like the COLIN EARL, PAUL KING, MIKE COLE/JOHN GODFREY, RAY DORSET with JOE RUSH on washboard, line-up, but Ray has developed the style and sound, and he's had many good folks around since then. I saw some time ago, the 'COOL JESUS' line-up, TORSTEN LUDERVALDT, WINNIE MARTIN, MARTIN TROIKE, and Ray and they were very, very good sounds, like going back to the 1970 sound. FAVOURITE ALBUM? It's tough , but the first LP, and 'ARMY' and 'TESTED' very, very close to the first LP, have really grown in interest after listening to them. And now I really don't know, as the latest albums are really, really good, different styles but 'COOL JESUS', 'ADULTS ONLY', 'WHEN SHE COMES, SHE RUNS ALL OVER ME' (I'll say it quick!) HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SEEN THE BAND LIVE? Well first time was 1994, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2009. Most of them in Esbjerg in Denmark, the latest in Barsinghausen in Germany. FAVOURITE GIG? 1994, I saw and said hello to Ray and the band for the first time. 2005, I had permission to make a video, 2008. I was backstage and at that time I had no place to stay after the gig. I drove with ALAN JOHNSON and TORSTEN LUDERWALDT, to a hotel and slept there. And 2009 in Barsinghausen, my family was with me, it was their first time and they were just like me, happy and had a great time. We all talked to Ray, Torsten, Winnie and his girlfriend Ulli, and Martin and took lots of photos. Really great gig, and really great guys, and girl! . IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE? First of all, I really would like to see COLIN EARL, PAUL KING, RAY, MIKE COLE and JOE RUSH in a 40-year reunion gig, and just want to say 'KEEP ON ROCKING' to Ray and the guys, and make lots of great MUNGO JERRY albums for 40 years to come and have a great time, and more wonderful gigs! |
![]() YOUR NAME? Kevin Irwin. LOCATION Doncaster. WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTO MUNGO JERRY? I first ‘got into’ MUNGO JERRY back in 1970 when I was 13. I used to baby sit for a neighbour and they had the maxi-single, 'IN THE SUMMERTIME'. I would play their records when they were out. While I quite enjoyed 'IN THE SUMMERTIME', 'DUST PNEUMONIA BLUES' and 'MIGHTY MAN' did it for me. It was a sound I’d never heard before with such raw energy and drive. I managed to get my own copy of the single and then my parents bought me the first album for my 14th birthday. That was it, I was hooked. While the other kids at school were walking around with their fancy prog rock albums (more in an effort to look trendy than enjoying the music I suspect) I reveled in being a rare breed, a dedicated MUNGO JERRY fan. My snooty friends were very dismissive at first, but I used to lend them the 'ELECTRONICALLY TESTED' album and, not wanting to lose face with their snobby mates, they would say yeah that was okay. I believe some of them went and bought the album themselves but didn’t admit it. They were great times then and MUNGO JERRY were appearing regularly on the DAVE CASH programme on TV. Articles in my girlfriends pop magazines. I even heard TERRY WOGAN play, 'SHE BETTER LEAVE THAT WHISKY ALONE', one afternoon. I wonder what happened to those videos MUNGO JERRY did for the DAVE CASH thing? DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE SONG(S)? I’m asked this quite frequently and I can’t really answer. It depends on my mood and my circumstances and so is constantly changing. The ones that are currently in my car CD player are, 'STATESBRO' BLUES', 'WE GOTTA GET OUT OF THE ARMY', 'HALF AN HOUR WITH YOU', 'WE SHALL BE FREE'... DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE-UP? It has to be the one that I first got to know with RAY DORSET, PAUL KING, COLIN EARL and JOHN GODFREY. Just nostalgia I suppose. FAVOURITE ALBUM? I think my favourite album remains the first one, MUNGO JERRY, (except for 'TRAMP', sorry Paul). HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SEEN THE BAND LIVE? Unfortunately I didn’t get to see them live in their peak of fame, as I was too young. The nearest I got was trying to book a gig in Southampton when I was 16 but my parents wouldn’t let me travel so far on my own. So, believe it or not, the first gig I saw was at a working men’s club in Doncaster. I can’t remember the exact year but I think it was around 1978/79. I can’t remember the line up but it was a great gig and Ray was at that phase where he refused to play 'IN THE SUMMERTIME'. I met Ray at the bar and bought him a drink but I was so awe struck I think I made a bit of an arse of myself! FAVOURITE GIG? Since then I must have seen about 20 MUNGO JERRY gigs. The best MUNGO JERRY gig I’ve seen, and probably one of the happiest days of my life, was the gig at the Village Tavern (Newcastle Under-Lyme, 2000 - 30th anniversary), a memory that I’ll cherish forever. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE? I’d love to see my fab four (Ray, Paul, Colin & John) perform again in a setting similar to the Village Tavern. |
