Both RAY DORSET and myself thought that it would be a good idea to set up a new page devoted to the fans of MUNGO JERRY, where I basically ask a few set questions. How long have you been a fan? What got you into the band? Favourite song? That sort of thing.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTO MUNGO JERRY?
First heard of MUNGO JERRY when in fifth form at school (year 11) in the summer of 1970. We had art lessons in the local tech...and arrived at the start of one of our afternoon lessons to find two blissed out looking tech students (a couple of years older than us - male and female) dancing to the record (a 45) on an old record player in our classroom. I thought it sounded brilliant! Of course it was 'IN THE SUMMERTIME' and it had obviously been released that week. I remember the college principal storming into the classroom, switching the record player off at the wall, and ordering the students "OUT!" After that, I enjoyed everything I heard by MUNGO JERRY, and at first remembered it all sounding rebeliously exciting!
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE SONG(S)?
I absolutely loved 'OPEN UP' which didn't do as well as its predecessors - think that was with the John line up? But my all time favourite track is 'MY GIRL & ME' - which I had on a maxi single with 'SUMMER'S GONE', etc.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE-UP?
The original of course, and the Polydor years, and the 'NAKED FROM THE HEART' trio.
FAVOURITE ALBUM?
My favourite album is 'BOOT POWER'.
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SEEN THE BAND LIVE?
I have never seen Ray or any version of the band 'live'. I just think its brilliant that he is still releasing new music. Since getting 'on line', I've bought all albums since 'CANDY DREAMS'.
FAVOURITE GIG?
N/A.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE?
These days I listen mostly to folk/folk rock music but I've always reckoned Ray would go down a storm at the annual FAIRPORT CONVENTION Cropredy Festival!!!

WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTO MUNGO JERRY?
It was in the summertime of 1970 and I was just turned 12. Glued to Top of the Pops every Thursday evening, the sound of that year was – well, we all know ‘that’ song don’t we... I loved it. I’d grown up with boogie-woogie music being played at my parents parties, had a deep love for the blues so it was kind of natural to like this refreshing blast of thumping joyfulness. I bought the single – still got it stored safely and I played it, played it, played it. My parents had maybe foolishly allowed me to have their old radiogram in my bedroom and MUNGO JERRY thudded through the ceiling over and over again. On to 'BABY JUMP', I was nearly 13 so the meaning was somewhat lost on me but by the next year I’d sort of caught on. 'LADY ROSE' in 71...all added to the collection and at least a bit of variety for the long-suffering parents. I was a member of the original MUNGO JERRY Fan Club, number 1468 I think although the info has long gone.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE SONG(S)?
That’s way too difficult a question...but the first random track that played on my new car CD player recently was 'IN THE SUMMERTIME'.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE-UP?
One that has Ray as front man.
FIRST GIG?
Christmas 1973 I believe and MUNGO JERRY were booked to play at the Cliffs Pavilion in Southend. I managed to wangle my way in and it was the first gig I ever went to. I was approaching 15 and after the show, my friends and I went to the stage door where I met Ray for the first time. He sent me a picture later signed ‘To Hillary, Love Ray Dorset. It is still in a photo album, carefully preserved with the details of the evening written on the back.

Fast forwarding over the years, I saw the band in various locations and with the ever changing line ups. Once I turned up in Quiberon, Brittany with my sister, another gig was in Bournemouth but life was moving on and I lost touch with what was happening with MUNGO JERRY. The records languished more often on the shelf but I still played them from time to time and they always gave me a lift and a smile.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE?
Now, this year, 2010, 40 years on from that first blistering, rollicking explosion of happiness, I’m 52, in a very sensible job, and with the time to catch up a bit. There was an article on BBC Radio 4 recently which explained that music liked at the ages of 13/14 imprints on the brain for some reason and it is the type that you always return to in later life with the fondest memories – I can certainly vouch for that!

Sooo, checking the web earlier this summer. The guys are playing a gig not far from me. It had been 25 years since I’d last seen them so carpe diem and I put it in my diary. Held at The Polish Club in Amersham, I toodled along. MUNGO JERRY was announced, I moved to the side of the stage so I could get a good view, expecting that a lot of people would be getting up immediately but no, there I was, rather vibrant in a bright turquoise kaftan and everyone else was still sitting down. Shrugs, ah well, at least I could get a good view!!!!

Banter, songs, I danced, lots of others danced too. I sang along, every time a ‘Guess which song this is’ question was asked, I murmured the correct title, rather bashfully but I was obviously an uber fan! After, of course, I wandered backstage and found Ray, had a chat about music, band history. We had a picture taken together and I just love the happy faces.

So, this summer, I’m making up for lost time and have a list of gigs I’d like to see of MUNGO JERRY and the various offspring bands. I had the great pleasure of seeing both MUNGO JERRY sets at Guilfest and have managed to get one of the last few tickets for Weyfest. Last night I saw PAUL KING with SKELETON CREW and found myself thumping the jangle stick thing with the band – that made me very, very happy and I was rather effusive after when thanking Paul, I was nothing like the confident, conservative, business-suited woman that is my usual guise but a tongue-tied (and slightly less than sober) beaming long term fan who'd regressed some decades in age! Not sure which other gigs I’ll be at this year yet but if you see a woman in a green fedora with a black rose pinned to the hatband – that’ll be me.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTO MUNGO JERRY?
Of course, 'IN THE SUMMERTIME' was the first contact with the music of MUNGO JERRY. It was so really nice to hear that skiffle and jug sounds. It makeS me happy! In the Netherlands MUNGO JERRY hit the top 10 only with 'IN THE SUMMERTIME' and 'ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT'. 'MAGGIE' scored place 14, so everything was quickly over and it was hard to find the MUNGO-stuff. After the album, 'YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE IN THE ARMY', it was very difficult to find something new here. But the internet did a lot of good things, it was then that I heard about the KING EARL BOOGIE BAND and so on. There were good times in my life, and sometimes sadness, and then there was always MUNGO who brought new fun in life. The music is full of happiness, listen to 'ELLA SPEED' for example. I met Ray several times and that's always fun. Frequently, there is always interest from Ray to his bigger fans, it's the warm heart he gives for his fans - we appreciate that. I collect MUNGO JERRY items worldwide under influence of one of the greatest fans of all - ROB KAMPHUES. He does a lot of good work. I think I've about 1500 MUNGO JERRY collectors items in my collection. Most valuable collectors item - PAUL KING's, 'BEEN IN THE PEN TOO LONG' - Japanese pressing!
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE SONG(S)?
My favourite song is 'YOU BETTER LEAVE THAT WHISKY ALONE'.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE-UP?
Of course Ray, Colin, Joe, Mike, Paul. Yes, for me Joe was too short a member of the band. Great influence of the music!
FAVOURITE ALBUM?
It's coming...'COOL JESUS'!
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SEEN THE BAND LIVE?
I've seen the band three times here in the Netherlands.
FAVOURITE GIG?
Favorite gig was Horst in the Netherland. Talked for about an hour with Ray.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE?
I wish to see Paul and Ray back again on stage together with Joe and Mike. I don't think we'll see Colin back again. Sad but true!

WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTO MUNGO JERRY?
Basically, 1970 when 'IN THE SUMMERTIME' came out.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE SONG(S)?
It's got to be 'LADY ROSE' but a close second is 'MARGUERITA' and 'BABY JUMP'.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE-UP?
The original band but anything Ray does/who he performs with is great anyway, but I quite like the BLUESBAND.
FAVOURITE ALBUM?
I have a couple of favourites, 'ELECTRONICALLY TESTED' and 'NAKED FROM THE HEART'.
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SEEN THE BAND LIVE?
About 12 times dating back to the late 70's/early 80's at the Barcelona Bar in Leeds. Would have seen them in the early 70's at The Spa in Bridlington but someone forgot to tell me they were playing which I will never forget!
FAVOURITE GIG?
30th anniversary Newcastle under Lyme. a brilliant day I will never forget, there have also been some great nights at the Processed Pea as well.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE?
Record stores stocking more MUNGO music and playing in the North of England again. It would be nice if 'GOING UP THE RIVER' was brought out as a summertime single, I'm convinced it would do really well. I also think the American guy who puts the videos on YOU TUBE is doing a great job, well done Marc, keep up the good work they are brilliant! I would also like to find out where I can get some more guitar chords for MUNGO music as I am self-teaching myself the guitar.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTO MUNGO JERRY?
As for many others, when I heard 'IN THE SUMMERTIME' in June 1970. It was so fresh and something completely new! I bought the album and after that I been a fan all the years.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE SONG(S)?
I have several favourites. I think my absolute favourite MUNGO JERRY tune is 'LADY ROSE'. That song has a happy feeling and I can hear it on and on.. Other favourites are 'SIMPLE THINGS', 'MY GIRL & ME', 'MY OWN COUNTRY', 'YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE IN THE ARMY TO FIGHT IN THE WAR', 'COMING BACK TO YOU WHEN THE TIME COMES', 'GOING UP THE RIVER', 'HOW CAN I LIVE A LIE'.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE-UP?
Hard to compare them but the 1974 line-up with Ray, BOB DAISLEY, IAN MILNE, DICK MIDDLETON and DAVE BIDWELL was great, I also like the 'SNAKEBITE' line-up and especially the one with TIM GREEN, JAMES DAVIS, STEVE JONES and MATT ROUND. It seemed that they could play almost everyting and it was a pity that they not record an album with Ray before they split.
FAVOURITE ALBUM?
'BOOT POWER', I think it stands the test of time very good and it´s really an 'ALBUM' and not only a couple of songs. I also like 'NAKED FROM THE HEART' and 'WHEN SHE COMES, SHE RUNS ALL OVER ME' very much.
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SEEN THE BAND LIVE?
I have only seen the band live once, in Denmark 1987 so that´s my favourite gig.
FAVOURITE GIG?
See above.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE?
It´s seems to happen a lot right now, Ray is playing with different musicians and MUNGO are now playing festivals again. I hope that MUNGO are going to play much more in musical theatres and that Ray and the band plays more less known and new songs and not only the old hits.
Why not an acoustic set and storytelling about a long and exciting career. I also hope that the 'COOL JESUS' album will be released soon and most of all I hope that Ray records 'THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES' album with a complete band. It`s nice with albums that have been recorded almost live in the studio but I really long for a well produced album full of new songs and good musicians as Alan, Torsten, Mike and more.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTO MUNGO JERRY?
I was 10-12 years old, I spent a weekend at my Uncle and Aunt's house, and of course my cousins. My Uncle had some 45's laying on a table and one of them was the 'IN THE SUMMERTIME' and 'MIGHTY MAN' single. I asked him to hear the record and made a lifetime interest in MUNGO JERRY. Later on, I made contact on the telephone with Ray, I wanted to say hi and got the number from Ray's mother, after asking telephone information, and ended up talking to Ray, and still have contact with Ray.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE SONG(S)?
Favourite song? Even after playing it day in and day out, ask my family? 'IN THE SUMMERTIME', and it's difficult, but latest favourite, 'I WANNA LIVE IN THE SUN', from 'COOL JESUS' is certainly one.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE-UP?
Well I really like the COLIN EARL, PAUL KING, MIKE COLE/JOHN GODFREY, RAY DORSET with JOE RUSH on washboard, line-up, but Ray has developed the style and sound, and he's had many good folks around since then. I saw some time ago, the 'COOL JESUS' line-up, TORSTEN LUDERVALDT, WINNIE MARTIN, MARTIN TROIKE, and Ray and they were very, very good sounds, like going back to the 1970 sound.
FAVOURITE ALBUM?
It's tough , but the first LP, and 'ARMY' and 'TESTED' very, very close to the first LP, have really grown in interest after listening to them. And now I really don't know, as the latest albums are really, really good, different styles but 'COOL JESUS', 'ADULTS ONLY', 'WHEN SHE COMES, SHE RUNS ALL OVER ME' (I'll say it quick!)
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SEEN THE BAND LIVE?
Well first time was 1994, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2009. Most of them in Esbjerg in Denmark, the latest in Barsinghausen in Germany.
FAVOURITE GIG?
1994, I saw and said hello to Ray and the band for the first time. 2005, I had permission to make a video, 2008. I was backstage and at that time I had no place to stay after the gig. I drove with ALAN JOHNSON and TORSTEN LUDERWALDT, to a hotel and slept there. And 2009 in Barsinghausen, my family was with me, it was their first time and they were just like me, happy and had a great time. We all talked to Ray, Torsten, Winnie and his girlfriend Ulli, and Martin and took lots of photos. Really great gig, and really great guys, and girl! .
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE?
First of all, I really would like to see COLIN EARL, PAUL KING, RAY, MIKE COLE and JOE RUSH in a 40-year reunion gig, and just want to say 'KEEP ON ROCKING' to Ray and the guys, and make lots of great MUNGO JERRY albums for 40 years to come and have a great time, and more wonderful gigs!

WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTO MUNGO JERRY?
I first ‘got into’ MUNGO JERRY back in 1970 when I was 13. I used to baby sit for a neighbour and they had the maxi-single, 'IN THE SUMMERTIME'. I would play their records when they were out. While I quite enjoyed 'IN THE SUMMERTIME', 'DUST PNEUMONIA BLUES' and 'MIGHTY MAN' did it for me. It was a sound I’d never heard before with such raw energy and drive. I managed to get my own copy of the single and then my parents bought me the first album for my 14th birthday. That was it, I was hooked. While the other kids at school were walking around with their fancy prog rock albums (more in an effort to look trendy than enjoying the music I suspect) I reveled in being a rare breed, a dedicated MUNGO JERRY fan. My snooty friends were very dismissive at first, but I used to lend them the 'ELECTRONICALLY TESTED' album and, not wanting to lose face with their snobby mates, they would say yeah that was okay. I believe some of them went and bought the album themselves but didn’t admit it. They were great times then and MUNGO JERRY were appearing regularly on the DAVE CASH programme on TV. Articles in my girlfriends pop magazines. I even heard TERRY WOGAN play, 'SHE BETTER LEAVE THAT WHISKY ALONE', one afternoon. I wonder what happened to those videos MUNGO JERRY did for the DAVE CASH thing?
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE SONG(S)?
I’m asked this quite frequently and I can’t really answer. It depends on my mood and my circumstances and so is constantly changing. The ones that are currently in my car CD player are, 'STATESBRO' BLUES', 'WE GOTTA GET OUT OF THE ARMY', 'HALF AN HOUR WITH YOU', 'WE SHALL BE FREE'...
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE-UP?
It has to be the one that I first got to know with RAY DORSET, PAUL KING, COLIN EARL and JOHN GODFREY. Just nostalgia I suppose.
FAVOURITE ALBUM?
I think my favourite album remains the first one, MUNGO JERRY, (except for 'TRAMP', sorry Paul).
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SEEN THE BAND LIVE?
Unfortunately I didn’t get to see them live in their peak of fame, as I was too young. The nearest I got was trying to book a gig in Southampton when I was 16 but my parents wouldn’t let me travel so far on my own. So, believe it or not, the first gig I saw was at a working men’s club in Doncaster. I can’t remember the exact year but I think it was around 1978/79. I can’t remember the line up but it was a great gig and Ray was at that phase where he refused to play 'IN THE SUMMERTIME'. I met Ray at the bar and bought him a drink but I was so awe struck I think I made a bit of an arse of myself!
FAVOURITE GIG?
Since then I must have seen about 20 MUNGO JERRY gigs. The best MUNGO JERRY gig I’ve seen, and probably one of the happiest days of my life, was the gig at the Village Tavern (Newcastle Under-Lyme, 2000 - 30th anniversary), a memory that I’ll cherish forever.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE?
I’d love to see my fab four (Ray, Paul, Colin & John) perform again in a setting similar to the Village Tavern.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTO MUNGO JERRY?
When my uncle turned over his collection of singles to me about fifteen years ago - it was enormous fun going through those record boxes since even he did not know what was there and it was a real joy to pull out each record, look at the label and see what it was. There was a few gems there I can tell you and one of those was the MUNGO JERRY maxi-single, 'BABY JUMP' with the excellent 'LIVE FROM HOLLYWOOD' cuts on the b-side.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE SONG(S)?
'BABY JUMP' out of the hits and generally the bluesy stuff, i.e;'WHERE ARE YOU'?, which I think is one of Ray's best ever songs. I am not so keen on the more commercial stuff.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE-UP?
The original 1970 line-up of RAY, PAUL, COLIN and MIKE COLE and the German based MUNGO JERRY BLUESBAND.
FAVOURITE ALBUM?
The 1970 debut since it is a diverse collection showcasing the talents of all the band members. I have heard some cuts from the most recent Bluesband offering, 'WHEN SHE COMES, SHE RUNS ALL OVER ME', which sounds promising. I will give my final verdict when my copy arrives in the post pretty soon.
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SEEN THE BAND LIVE?
Twice.
FAVOURITE GIG?
My favourite gig was the British Legends Of Rhythm And Blues tour in 2003 in which everybody on the bill was on great form including Ray. That gig got such an enthusiastic response from the audience that the musicians, a stellar line-up including PAUL WILLIAMS, ZOOT MONEY and the late LONG JOHN BALDRY were inspired to put everything they had into it and some more!
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE?
It would be great if Ray and his German based backing band, which recorded 'ADULTS ONLY' and 'WHEN SHE COMES, SHE RUNS ALL OVER ME' would play some dates over here in the UK. It may well be that they already have but if so I have missed them and would like to see them live.

1973 at Blackpool Mecca, and '73 again at St.Martins College in Lancaster. More recently, 2002 and the thrill of Ray letting me join him on harmonica at the Processed Pea near Hull. Then Ray's fantastic performance on the Blues Legends tour at Morecambe.

All the fantastic memories of Ray and MUNGO will be with me forever, and with yet still more to experience. Thanks Ray, and KEEP ON ROCKIN'!

WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTO MUNGO JERRY?
In 1970, I heard 'IN THE SUMMERTIME', liked it but didn't really go too overboard until 'BABY JUMP' was released...and that was it!
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE SONG(S)?
Lots! 'BABY JUMP' was the first one, 'LADY ROSE, is probably my favourite MUNGO song, it captured the magic of the DORSET/KING/EARL/GODFREY line-up perfectly, and I've always loved PAUL KING's number, 'NOBODY KNOWS', the B-side of his 1973 single, 'LOOK AT ME NOW'.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE-UP?
I'd have to say the DORSET/KING/EARL/GODFREY/RUSH line-up is my favourite, they were magical, but after that I'd say the 1974 line-up with BOB DAISLEY, DICK MIDDLETON, IAN MILNE and DAVE BIDWELL, the 1976 time when COLIN EARL and JOE RUSH returned, with PETE SULLIVAN and CHRIS WARNES, and more recently with JAMES DAVIS, MATT ROUND and TOBY HOUNSHAM - they were so talented and versatile.
FAVOURITE ALBUM?
Hmmm...probably 'YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE IN THE ARMY', Ray and Paul's solo albums are brilliant, but I like all of them for different reasons.
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SEEN THE BAND LIVE?
I've tried to work it out many times, it's something like 80+.
FAVOURITE GIG?
Maybe the first in 1971, as it was the only time I ever saw that line-up. I remember the series of gigs the band did in my area in 1976 as that was how I became great friends with Joe, Colin, Pete and the guys. One special day was in 2000 when MICKY ROSE and I travelled to Hampshire to see MUNGO at the Whitchurch Festival in the afternoon, and then travelled down to Devon to see COLIN EARL and the KING EARL BOOGIE BAND - both on the same day! But there have been some great gigs over the years, and more to come I'm sure.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE?
It already seems to be happening, everything is going well, Ray is playing with different musicians, lots of different projects going on, it's great!.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTO MUNGO JERRY?
I always knew the song, 'IN THE SUMMERTIME', I was born in 1960 so I was 11 when 'IN THE SUMMERTIME' came out, and I think I remember it from that long ago, but I never knew who it was. Then a lot of years past and I was out of work for a few weeks in 2005 and I met a great friend from the Metal Guru website, his name was MILAN MIKSE, he loved T.REX as I do too, but he loved MUNGO JERRY just as much and he asked me do I like MUNGO JERRY? I said "MUNGO WHO", I laughed? Then he started sending me MUNGO JERRY music, I think the first song he sent was 'BABY JUMP' and I said, "Wow, this is good"! Then he sent much more MJ music and I started to love a lot of what I was listening to. Then Milan sent me 2 original MUNGO albums, and a 45, he sent 'BABY JUMP' ('ELECTRONICALLY TESTED') (BOOT POWER) and the 45 is ('BABY JUMP/THE MAN BEHIND THE PIANO') then I bought stuff from the on-line shop, all the music is great! Well, Milan died in 2007, I miss him so much, through Milan I became a big fan of RAY DORSET, I talked to Ray on the phone 2 times and there have been many e-mails, sorry for carrying on, I guess I got into MUNGO JERRY in 2005.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE SONG(S)?
Yes there are many songs I love, 'IN THE SUMMERTIME', 'BABY JUMP', 'LANA', 'HELLO IT'S YOU AGAIN', 'MAKE ME HAPPY', and I just heard the song 'HERE WE GO' (CAPE OF GOOD HOPE). I love this song so much, I can go on and on, there are so many great songs!
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE-UP?
No I don't, just as long as Ray is singing. I think I don't have a favorite line-up 'cos I did not grow up with them.
FAVOURITE ALBUM?
O'man this is hard but it might be 'BABY JUMP' (ELECTRONICALLY TESTED).
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SEEN THE BAND LIVE?
I never saw RAY DORSET/MUNGO JERRY live. I hope he comes to New York or New Jersey one day, and you can bet I will be there!
FAVOURITE GIG?
I don't have one.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE?
I would love to see Ray do a little U.S tour.
